In Chinese, Ireland is called 愛爾蘭(Ài Ěr Lán). 愛 means love, and 蘭 means orchids.  爾 means you in literary language writing, but this word is often used for name of nobles or western name. How beautiful it is!  IRELAND

I went on a 18-day trip in Ireland. From the capital -Dublin,  I traveled around this beautiful emerald island in counterclockwise. Sligo is a county in the north west. Really lucky to stay here and go around in this small town.

Follow Yeats’s steps in his beloved homeland.

Sligo Town is really small and almost everything is in a walking distance. I booked a hostel called Harbour House, which is only 10 minutes walk from the centre of town. Even it is relatively small, Sligo is famous of its cultural , historic, literary and natural beauty.

The beauty of Sligo had inspired the Irish poet, Yeats, to create those masterpieces. Yeats must be the principle representative figure in Sligo. Many people come here and follow Yeats’s footprint to see his beautiful hometown.

How to get there?

From Dublin- train, bus or plane.

Train is around €30, and it takes 3’30.
Bus is cheaper and you can get amazing price on  Bus Éireann ! And the traffic time is just a little but longer.

What to see ?

Country Sligo

The best way to travel around Country Sligo is by car. But if you don’t have a car, bus is also a good choice. The information and timetable are easily found in the Sligo travel center.

I went around country Sligo by bus and drive by locals. Places recommended are Drumcliff, Glencar , Lough Gill, Strandhill and the Rosses Point.

Since beach breaks in Strandhill are capable of holding huge waves , here has became a famous surfing place in the west of Ireland. Well…the water is too cold for me definitely!!Due to the bus schedule, there are enough time for me to walk around this place. I have to say everything is new and cool for me, a European country side! My first one!

Drumcliff is in the north. Here is the hometown of Yeats’s mother, many spots can be seen from his poets. From Drumcliff, you can see my favourite spot in Sligo- Benbulben, which is also known as Table Mountain. This mountain was shaped in ice age when most area on Earth were still under glaciers. The glaciers cut into and form this distint shape. Benbulben looks stunning when covering by morning fog, for me, it looks like a sleeping giant standing there for centuries to guard this emerald island.

Under bare Ben Bulben’s head
In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid.
An ancestor was rector there

-W.B.Yeats

Along the foot of Benbulben, a local drove me to Glencar. All the way was with beautiful scenery and we can see sheep walked around. Glencar is “very Ireland” for me- green filed , lake, forest and waterfall. This scene has the magic to purify your spirit and clean your soul.

There is a really famous poem called The Lake Isle of Innisfree about Lough Gill. What comes to mind when you heard the word Innisfree?  Yep, most Asians must associate it this word with a famous Korea cosmetics company. Actually, Innisfree is an island in the middle of Lough Gill in Sligo.When walking through the Fleet St. in the gray London in 1888, sounds of the little tinkle of water brought him back into his memory. Yeats wrote down this poem to express his homesick.

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree -W.B.Yeats

Last place I visited was Rosses Point near the harbor. There is a really famous statue called Waiting on shore. The statue depicts a woman holding out her arms to sea, standing there waiting for lost souls to come back home.

Lost at sea, lost at sea
Or in the evening tide
We loved you, we miss you
May God with you abide.

Sligo Town

The Sligo Town is pretty small and almost everything is in a walking distance. The statue of Yeat and the historic post office are famous spots. You can see everything in 1hr.  For tourists, country side is the better choice for sure.

My final note..

Ireland is my beginning of Europe trip.I had too much fun all the time in this 18 days, the Irish people showed me their disposition characterized by warmth and friendliness. It warms my heart when everyone passed by said hello to me in the country side, and cars stopped to let people standing beside cross first. (I am sorry to say that, but you will hit by car if you do this in Taiwan. haha)

Another reason I love Ireland is 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 ! So cute. Sheep in Ireland are with different colour paining on their back for recognition. The local farmer laughed so much when I came up a new name rainbow sheep for Irish sheep.🌈🐑

Days in Sligo were peace, quite and calm. I totally understand why Yeats can write down his masterpieces with these view.  However, I deleted most photos I took in Ireland by accident,only few photos left.:(  Hope there will be another opportunity to visit there again.!
